Ciri-ciri fisik Homo floresiensis
Alasan manusia purba jenis Homo floresiensis disebut juga dengan “manusia kerdil” adalah karena memiliki tinggi badan kurang dari 100 cm. Bahkan postur tubuh manusia ini yang paling tinggi hanya sekitar 100 cm.
Ketika Peter Brown dan Mike J. Moorwood melakukan penggalian, fosil yang ditemukan berupa tengkorak dengan ukuran mungil.

Mengapa tubuhnya kerdil?
Tim ilmuwan yang meneliti menganggap Homo floresiensis sebagai keturunan spesies Homo erectus yang hidup di Asia Tenggara sekitar satu juta tahun lalu. Akibat proses seleksi alam, tubuh mereka berevolusi menjadi lebih kecil.
Hipotesis ini didasarkan pada penemuan berbagai peralatan yang biasa digunakan oleh Homo erectus di sekitar fosil Homo floresiensis.
Selain itu, penggalian di Flores juga menemukan fosil gajah purba (stegodon) berukuran kecil.
Penemuan tersebut semakin menguatkan hipotesis para ilmuwan bahwa banyak makhluk hidup di Flores yang menyesuaikan diri dengan habitatnya dengan cara berubah bentuk menjadi lebih kecil.
Sementara itu, Teuku Jacob mengatakan bahwa Homo floresiensis adalah nenek moyang orang-orang Flores yang menderita penyakit microcephalia, yaitu bertengkorak dan berotak kecil.
Penyakit tersebut saat ini juga masih ditemukan pada beberapa penduduk di sekitar Gua Liang Bua.
